NEW YORK -- Mavericks guard Delonte West sounded contrite yet surprised by the $25,000 fine levied against him by the NBA for jabbing his finger in the ear of Utah swingman Gordon Haywood. "I didnt think it was going to be that steep," West said Wednesday night before Dallas played Houston. "Its a play that shouldnt be in the game. ... Its not a good example to set for the youth that we are trying to teach to play the right way." The NBA issued the fine earlier in the day, calling it a "physical taunt." West had been called for fouling Hayward away from the ball then walked after him to give him what he called a "wet willy" during the second quarter of Utahs 123-121 triple-overtime win over Dallas on Monday night. West received a technical but was not tossed out of the game. Hayward walked away from the confrontation. Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle didnt want to discuss the fine before Wednesdays game. He said the team accepts it and is moving forward. The coach, however, did have a conversation about the incident with West, who acknowledged that it wasnt a smart play. "I get intense and I get fiery out there, he just wants me to channel my energy the right way," West said. "Got to be a smart player all areas of the floor, not just offence and defence. Youve got to play the cerebral game too, and knowing guys are trying to get underneath my skin and things like that." cheap jerseys from china . E-mail Hockey Insider Darren Dreger and hell answer your emails at dregereport@tsn.ca! Hey Dregs, If the Columbus Blue Jackets keep struggling this season, do you think Rick Nash may ask for a trade? Do you think the team might think about trading him? Patrick A: Hey Patrick. Im not very good at predicting the future, nor is it fair to speculate on what Rick Nash is thinking. However, I know Nash is very proud of his role as captain of the Columbus Blue Jackets and accepts some of the responsibility for his teams disappointing start this season. Nash believed in this team when he signed a long term extension in 2010 and I cant imagine, as bad as the Blue Jackets appear to be right now, hes ready to bail. Nash is a man of character and will work with the organization to get stronger. Its possible that things may sour in the future to a point where that view changes, but its unfair to speculate hes at that stage now, or that the team will consider trading him. Columbus general manager Scott Howson has addressed and dismissed those rumours and earlier today as spoke to my colleague Aaron Portzline following a report Blue Jackets forward Jeff Carter has asked for a trade. Heres Portzlines update posted on BlueJacketsxtra.com: "There has been no trade request," Howson said. Asked if Carter or his agent, Rick Curran, had even intimated that the player would welcome a move, Howson said: "No. Not at all." He then continued ... "Look, nobodys happy right now. Jeffs not happy. Rick (Nash) isnt happy. Weve won three games. Nobodys happy. We see Jeff as part of the solution here. We want to get him integrated into the lineup and into the team. Hes missed 10 games, and hes only now getting back into the lineup and playing. We gave up two very big assets for him." Curran also has denied that Carter has requested a trade. ----- Darren, What are your thoughts on the Bruins potentially trading Tuukka Rask? With Thomas continuing to play at an elite level and quite affordable when you consider some of the goalie contracts that have been signed the last couple of years, doesnt it make sense for the Bruins to try to pry away an impact forward or defenceman while his value is high? Not to mention that at some point Rask will be tired of being a back-up and seek a trade himself! Lets face it, his career is being stalled by Thomas! Thanks,Jeff A: Jeff, youre right - Rask would have considerable value if the Bruins were to throw his name on to the open market. Although each and every time this subject is raised with the few GMs in the NHL who have the luxury of such quality back up goalies (Schneider-VAN, Enroth-BUF), its quickly dismissed based on the belief, to go deep in to the playoffs and contend for the Stanley Cup, you need an above-average goaltending tandem. At 37, Tim Thomas is clearly in the twilight of his career. Thomas, who has one season remaining at $5 million, doesnt represent the future in goal in Boston. But Rask does. Tuukka is scheduled to become a restricted free agent on July 1 and will undoubtedly get a nice raise onn the $1.dddddddddddd5 million hes earning this season. Hes more than happy biding his time in Boston, polishing the Stanley Cup ring he helped his team win last summer while being mindful of the opportunity he may have to lead this organization to future championships. ----- Hi Darren, Seems like this year, were not hearing much about the Phoenix Coyotes situation. When does the league need to make a decision on this team and do you think the city of Glendale is going to give the NHL yet another $25 million gift to keep them in the desert (Go, Nordiques, Go!)? Thanks, Marc (Gatineau, Quebec) A: Marc, Glendale will not pay the $25 million again. That ship has sailed. While there is no official date set, its believed there is a soft deadline of late January as to when the NHL would need to know whether it has a firm ownership group in place to take over the Coyotes. It seems unlikely, however, the NHL would acknowledge the possibility of relocation before the Coyotes play their final game, so we are still months away from determining the future of this team in the desert. ----- Hi Darren, what is the status of Andy McDonalds concussion? Is it serious? Hes been out for a month! Thanks. Yours truly,Thomas J. Salb, B.Sc., OLIP A: Thomas, Im told McDonald isnt around the team much, so that would suggest, like Perron, Crosby and others who have suffered a major concussion, hes taking the time he needs to rest and deal with whatever symptoms he may still have in a more controlled environment. With injuries to Crombeen, Perron and Huskins to name but a few, the St. Louis Blues are dealing with a considerably depleted lineup. But the good news comes in the fact that David Perron continues to skate every day and appears to to be getting close to a return. In fact, Perron wore a regular sweater Friday in practice and has been cleared for contact. Theres still no official timetable for when he might be able to come back from what has been an incredibly difficult journey. ----- Hey Darren, I was wondering why a team like Anaheim would pick up a slumping player like Niklas Hagman for $1.5 million off re-entry waivers? He could be a dud and just take up cap space. Do you think Anaheim get a new lease on the season from Hagman or will he just take up room in the press box? Thanks, JoshCalgary A: Josh, no question claiming Hagman on re-entry is a gamble and even at $1.5 million which is Anaheims share of Hagmans $3 million salary, its an expensive risk. Hagman made his Ducks debut against archrival Los Angeles on Thursday and played on a line with Brandon McMillan and Devante Smith-Pelly. Hagman played just over 10 minutes in a 5-3 loss and finished the night an even player, while Anaheims stars Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry were both minus-3. At just 31, it appeared in Calgary that Hagmans better days were behind him, but its hard to fault Ducks GM Bob Murray for trying to fill a hole in his third line by taking a flyer on veteran player who needs a fresh start. Hes a character guy and will give the Ducks all he has at a cost thats far more friendly at half price. I have no problem with this claim. ' ' '
