ABBEY BORGIA

"She was only 13," says her best friend, Robert. He says it so simply, but looks so surprised. As if it could not, should not, happen to one so young. Robert is 13, too.

He lives down the road from the Borgias in a little street in Tempe, not so much a thoroughfare as a communal back yard. The neighbourhood kids have played together there since Abbey was a baby and her brothers, Ben and Blake, were toddlers.

The kitchen is the soul of the Borgias' house, where the grown-ups gather. Now, a corner of the living room is a shrine, decorated with photos of Abbey and her Street By 50 Headphones mother, Sms Audio Headphones Debbie. Outside is a small back yard, filled to its concrete edges SMS Audio By 50 with a swimming pool. Abbey used it more than anyone else.

"Look at me!" she would call to her dad, John. Abbey liked to dive into the pool in her pyjamas. "Look at my handstand! Why don't you come in, too!"

In her bedroom were a thousand CDs, says Ben, 23. "Britney Spears and all that pop rubbish." For hours, Abbey practised writing her signature. Abbey Borgia, Abbey Borgia - just to see how it looked.

Like any 13-year-old girl, she loved sleep-overs. But she did not settle for two or three girlfriends. She liked 10 or more to stay over, to chatter the night away. She was the boss of the sleep-over, the funny one, the one cracking the jokes.

Some days, after school, she would go to her grandmother's place, have a snack, have a bath, and come home in Nan's pyjamas. "It didn't bother her," said John. "Beautiful. She wrapped everyone around her little finger. Especially me."
