Interview Recap - Chris Nowinski

This past week on In Your Head Jack, OneInchBiceps and Barbie Richards were there yet again to interview the only Harvard graduate in the wrestling business Christopher Nowinski. It was a good quick interview in which he discusses his old and new life with the WWE, The major problems with concussions in sports, Tough Enough, Theodore Long and of course his best selling book ?Head Games? Chris starts out the show by saying that he is doing great and is working for ?the Man? now and is currently writing an article for Sports Illustrated.

Jack asks if his is proud that his new book has made an impact on the sports community? Chris says that he is immensely proud at the impact the book has done for sports and that he is getting letters from kids and parents, thanking him for making them more aware of the silent consequence of concussions related to sports. Chris says that he is now the main resource for concussions in the sporting world and that a lot of people look to him to really inform the world of the problem.

Jack asks if anybody has tried to discredit his name or the book because of his role in Professional wrestling? Mr. Nowinski says he really thought he would, but because he did his research so well and referenced a lot of different articles with in his book, nobody tried to discredit him and his research. Chris also said the Harvard Degree came in handy when the book was coming out and he wasn?t just a pro wrestler.

A caller calls into the show with a couple of questions, What was it like working with William Regal and what was it like to be in Theodore Long?s group? Chris said that William Regal is one of the guys he really remains close with and that Regal took him under his wing when young Nowinski first entered the WWE. When it came to working with Rodney Mack and Teddy Long, it was an interesting time, Chris thinks it limited his character because it didn?t showcase his mic skills. Overall he had a good time in the group, he also said the Teddy Long was the person who told him he should look at moving on from in-ring action after his concussions.

Jack and Chris talk about the book, Jack says its not like a text book but is very entertaining with a lot of different stories from people of all sports.

A caller calls in and asks, what his thoughts where on WWE showcasing him as the bad guy on the TV show Tough Enough? Chris said that he is grateful for that and that WWE did put there creative spin on it but if it weren?t for that he probably wouldn?t have a job. A Harvard graduate would never make it as a baby face.

The same caller asks if he has ever thought about managing? Chris would love to come back as a manager, but because managers aren?t used a lot in the WWE, he?s not sure how it would turn out but if the opportunity arose to be a manager, he?d love to do it.

Chris says that when he was doing the debate with Scott Steiner, he said he wrote a lot of it and sat in a room with Vince McMahon going over it.

Jack brings up a question from the Chat room, Have you ever thought of doing heel commentary? Chris says that he tried out for it before and said he did a little commentating for Killer Kowalski?s promotion and he enjoyed that. If the opportunity arose where he could do commentary for one of the major shows he?d do it, but with only 3 jobs in the world, he doesn?t? hold his breath on it.

Incher brings up a question from the message board, Why do you think most kids from Tough Enough fail in the business? Chris thinks that besides Nitro, Jackie Gayda and Matt Cappotelli, almost all the people who tried out had no passion for the business.

Incher asks if they should do a new Tough Enough? Chris said they should and they should go back to the old format of a reality show as opposed to vignettes on Smack down. Chris also thinks they should use independent wrestlers, with lesser names and have Tough Enough just give them mainstream exposure.

Jack asks if there are any moves that should be banned in the wrestling world? Chris says that people taking chair shots to the back of the head because you don?t see it coming and you cant adjust your body to take the force like you would if the chairs shot was to the front of the head. Chris thinks its very dangerous and completely un-necessary.

Barbie asks a question from the Message Board, Did people know that he was wrestling fan in Harvard? Chris says that he first became a wrestling fan while attending Harvard and that most of the people in his dorm all watched wrestling and that is where he fell in love with it.

In Chris? final moments on the show, he just says for everybody to check out the book and the website http://concussioncrisis.com/ He really believes that concussions in sports is a serious problem and that 90% go un-diagnosed. He says it?s a great book that everybody should check out.
