LARAMIE, Wyo. -- Wyoming coach Larry Shyatt was familiar with this feeling -- even if it had been a while. Riley Grabau scored 17 points, Larry Nance Jr. had 14 and the Cowboys beat No. 5 San Diego State 68-62 on Tuesday night to end the Aztecs 20-game winning streak. Shyatt was Wyomings coach 16 years ago -- almost to the day -- the last time a top-five team was upset in Arena-Auditorium. That was Feb. 12, 1998, when the Cowboys took down No. 5 Utah 62-56 on the same floor. "Its like a good bottle of wine -- it gets better with age," Shyatt said. The Cowboys (15-9, 6-5 Mountain West Conference) savored another marquee win Tuesday as fans rushed the court after the final buzzer, mobbing Wyoming players. "Their only other loss was to Arizona," Nance said. "I mean, to be in that category is awesome, you know? Fifth-ranked team, the fans storming the court like they did, it was spectacular." The Aztecs (21-2, 10-1) won 20 in row after losing to Arizona in their second game of the season. The streak tied the program mark set by the 2010-11 team, which finished a school-record 34-3 after reaching the Sweet Sixteen for the first time. "This is a tough league and you go on the road and it becomes even tougher. And with the win streak we had, I think everybody knows it and everybody talks about they want to be the team to break it and storm the court," SDSU coach Steve Fisher said. "And to Wyomings credit, they were the ones. They were the ones that did it. They played better and they deserved one." Dwayne Polee II led San Diego State with 15 points, followed by Xavier Thames with 13. "Youve just got to take it as a learning experience," said Thames, who was averaging 18.1 points. "Theres a lot of season left, so we cant hang our heads." Wyoming built a 16-point lead midway through the second half, catching the Aztecs defence lagging several times. At one point, the Cowboys slammed down four consecutive dunks. San Diego State mounted a furious comeback, closing within four points with 1:04 left and again with 40 seconds to go on two buckets by Winston Shepard, who finished with 10 points. But the Aztecs, who were averaging 73.4 points, failed to score again as Wyoming pulled away with free throws in the final 30 seconds. Nathan Sobey and Charlie Hankerson Jr. each had nine points for Wyoming, which used an efficient offence and a stifling defence to stop San Diego State. The game featured the top two defensive teams in the Mountain West. Entering the game, San Diego State was giving up an average of 56.6 points, while the Cowboys were allowing 60.4. But it was the Aztecs who had the most trouble making baskets, hitting 38 per cent of their field goals and committing 13 turnovers while Wyoming made 58 per cent of its attempts from the floor and had 11 turnovers. The Cowboys took a 32-23 halftime lead, closing out the last 4:20 of the first half with a 10-3 run keyed by two 3-pointers from Grabau. nfl jerseys wholesale .J. - The Broncos braved the cold for their first full practice of Super Bowl week, working in pads for nearly two hours after a 30-minute walkthrough session Wednesday. nfl jerseys china .B. -- Aidan Kelly scored the shootout winner as the Saint John Sea Dogs edged the Val-dOr Foreurs 5-4 in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action Friday night. http://www.nfljerseyschinaplay.com/.ca Fantasy Editor Scott Cullen and NFL Editors Mitch Ward and Ben Fisher discuss three hot fantasy football topics. The Nashville Predators will be without star defenceman Shea Weber for an indefinite period due to a concussion, the team announced on Tuesday. He will be evaluated on a daily basis with no date scheduled for his return. Weber was hit hard by Mark Fistric in Nashvilles game against Dallas Friday. He appeared fine after the game and was even able to speak to reporters. On Monday, however, Weber left practice early and the team was unsure what was ailing him. "Theres no official timetable for his return, but hes feeling better and Im hoping theres a chance for him to return Friday," head coach Barry Trotz told TSN. "But well see." Weber is Nashvilles captain and leading scorer with 29 points in 35 games, and also leads the team with a +14 rating -- they only have three players on the plus side of the ledger.dddddddddddd Weber has not missed a game since March 2, 2010. Nashville recalled defenceman Ryan Ellis from Milwaukee (AHL) in time for Mondays game. Ellis was the teams top pick in the 2009 draft, 11th overall, and was having a big year with 17 points in 26 games with the Admirals. He played 18 minutes in his NHL debut Monday, registerign three shots and a -1 rating in the loss to Detroit. FORT WORTH, Texas -- Criminal charges have been dropped against Cowboys defensive tackle Henry Melton over a 2013 altercation at a Dallas-area bar. Tarrant County prosecutors on Wednesday announced the misdemeanour case against Melton has been dismissed, along with civil proceedings. Melton was arrested in December in Grapevine, where he went to high school, on charges of misdemeanour assault and public intoxication. Police said Melton refused to leave and allegedly fought with bar workers. He denied the allegations. The bar owner and Melton both sued. Prosecutors on Wednesday said the civil proceedings were dismissed without either party paying damages and the bar owner requested that criminal charges be dropped. Melton was with the Bears since 2010. The Cowboys in March signed Melton to an incentive-laden one-year contract with a $1.25 million base salary. cheap jerseys from china free shipping . -- While much of the nation is buried in snow, glazed by ice or just plain shivering in the cold, its time to play ball in the desert. cheap jerseys from china paypal . 1 draft picks on their roster but its a former St. http://www.cheapjerseysfromchinashop.us.com/. "Were in 175 countries, 23 different languages and over a billion homes worldwide in some form of television," he said Tuesday on TSN Drive with Dave Naylor and Dave Hodge on TSN Radio 1050. "We are the largest pay-per view provider on the planet."What makes White and his organization special is that they are always reaching farther and aiming higher. In 2014, the UFC has already held events in the U.S., Canada, Brazil, China, U.K., Abu Dhabi and Singapore. By the end of the year, Japan, Sweden, Turkey, Germany and New Zealand will be added to that list. Additionally, White has begun his descent south into Latin America, where the UFC will host its first-ever event in Mexico – a heavyweight title bout between champion Cain Velasquez and Fabricio Werdum in November. The show – UFC 180 – will also feature the finale bouts of "The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America", the regions first edition of the reality show.As mentioned, White has big plans and high hopes for expansion. "You guys know how big (UFC) is in Canada, you know how big it is in the U.S. Well in Brazil, The Ultimate Fighter reality show gets 12 million viewers a week. And when we do a live fight on TV, 65 million people watch down in Brazil, its insane," he said. "We believe that Mexico and Latin America will rival that."However, there are still growing pains for White and his 20-year-old organization. Many would say the UFC is still in its infancy, despite the resounding success. And in a sport where violence is front and centre 100 per cent of the time, White says there is an important "education process" that has to take place in order to attract more fans.dddddddddddd "Theres still a lot of people who havent been reached. Theres still a lot of people that are uneducated about the sport," White said. "Every day when we get up and we continue to move into other countries and continue to do business here in the U.S. and Canada, which are huge markets for mixed martial arts, theres still that education process."The fight game can be trivial at times. Where one night a pair of 200-pound men could stand toe-to-toe, bloody, crashing hooks and jabs into each others jaws until one collapses to the floor unconscious, another night could see a tactical matchup featuring two jiu-jitsu practitioners, twisting inside and out on the mat searching for an advantageous position while fighting off the grasp of their opponent. Fights can be night and day, overtly vicious or deceptively calm. With this come frequent misconceptions about the dangers of a combat sport. Its nothing White hasnt had to address before. "To a person whos uneducated about the sport or about the UFC they would probably believe people have died competing in the UFC," he said. "In the 20-year history of the UFC there has never been a death or serious injury. In 20 years, cheerleading cant say that."It is unlikely the UFC and mixed martial arts will ever be universally accepted. But that just means White will never be out of work. "Every day were in meetings pushing the company forward," he said. "Im a pretty simple guy. I love the sport, I love the UFC, I love fights." ' ' '

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Chris Wondolowski and Walter Martinez each scored and the San Jose Earthquakes beat FC Dallas 2-1 Saturday in the season finale for both teams. The Earthquakes came into the game in contention for a playoff berth, but would have needed to score 13 goals and have Colorado lose Vancouver on Sunday. Stephen Keel scored in the 90th minute for FC Dallas, which already had been eliminated from playoff contention. David Bingham made his first start of the season for the Earthquakes. San Joses victory gave the retiring Ramiro Corrales a successful send off. The last original member of the MLS from 1996, Corrales made his first start since Sept. 14 and had two chances to score in the first 11 minutes. The Earthquakes finished the season with a seven-match unbeaten streak and a 16-game unbeaten run at home. Dallas, which ended its home season with a victory its last time out, went 1-5-1 over its last seven games. Martinez came back from a missed shot in the 23th minute to give the Earthquakes a 1-0 edge four minutes later. Justin Morrow sent a forward pass along the left sideline, where Martinez collected it and kicked a low shot past Dallas goalkeeper Chris Seitz and into the right corner of the net. Wondolowski received a pass from Shea Salinas just inside the penalty box and fired a drive into the near top corner in the 57th minute. San Jose went 11-5-3 under interim coach Mark Watson, who replaced Frank Yallop midway through the season. Watson remains a leading candidate to become coach. Dallas coach Schellas Hyndman was on the sidelines for the final time after announcing earlier that he would retire following the season. He spent the past six years in the MLS. Corrales leaves as the Earthquakes leader in games played with 250. A brief, pregame ceremony was held for him and he received a standing ovation when he subbed out in the 60th minute and was carried off the field by teammates Steven Lenhart and Victory Bernandez. "I never gave up and that is very important, if you are a sportsman or in life," Raich said. Raich showed that all his technical skills have survived a serious knee injury one year ago, mastering a tough middle section as he clocked 1 minute, 34.37 seconds on the Nationale course. Adrien Theaux of France was runner-up, 0.24 seconds back, and Cuche trailed Raich by 0.36. "After my accident last year and my injury, and after the two years without victory, its great," Raich said. "I was sure that it was possible (to win again) but you never know. I worked really hard." Cuche, who won Fridays super-G when Raich was third, praised his old rival who was criticized by some Austrian media over his early-season results. "Nobody had enough patience to let him do what he is able to do," Cuche said. "But with Benni you can be sure that if he has no trouble, no pain, he will be back sooner or later." Cuche helped attract 23,000 spectators to see him race in Switzerland for the final time this weekend before retiring. Swiss teammate Beat Feuz, who is nursing knee pain, was 10th and missed another chance to take the overall standings lead from Austrian Marcel Hirscher. Hirscher, defending overall champion Ivica Kostelic of Croatia and Feuz, are separated by just 15 points. Hirscher sat out Saturdays race to prepare for his specialist giant slalom event on Sunday, and Kostelic is expected to race again in two weeks after knee surgery.dddddddddddd Bode Miller was sidelined for a second straight day to help his left knee heal after undergoing minor knee surgery in the United States this week. Miller could race the GS on Sunday. Raichs 36th World Cup victory, sixth on the all-time list ahead of Miller, was his first in super-G. The former World Cup overall champion, who will be 34 on Tuesday, last won in December 2009 at a super-combined event at Val dIsere, France. Raichs injury sustained at the 2011 World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, ended his season one year ago, but he has come back strongly since January. His three podium finishes this season have all been in Switzerland. Despite supporting Cuche, the knowledgeable Swiss crowd generously applauded Raich when he crossed the line after an impressively clean run on the soft snow. Cuche lost his ideal line after a jump and was slowed by venturing into soupy snow at the side of the course. "I knew that I was able to win again but you have to bring it from the top to the bottom. It cost me all the speed because I had to push into the soft snow," the 37-year-old Swiss star said. However, Cuche closed to within seven points of super-G leader Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway, who placed ninth for the second consecutive day. Jan Hudec of Canada rose to third in the discipline standings, after adding a fifth-place finish to his runner-up spot on Friday. Two more super-G races are scheduled next weekend at Kvitfjell, Norway. Race temperatures were merely warm, as the sun occasionally broke through cloud cover, compared to Fridays relative Alpine heatwave. ' ' '

TORONTO – The punishment would seem to be worth the toll it takes on the body of 31-year-old Tim Gleason. "I shouldnt even say anything," said Gleason with a touch of good humour after the latest Leafs win, "but Ill knock on some wood because the pucks are hitting me. Id rather them hit me than go in the net or have (the goaltender) save 75 shots or whatever the case is." "I guess its being in the right spot or sometimes I think its the worst spot to be." Seemingly numb to the physical destruction his play seems to entail, Gleason blocked five more shots on Thursday night, also dolling out six hits in nearly 24 minutes – a team-high – en route to his teams eighth win in the past 10 games (8-1-1), a 6-3 topping of the Panthers at home. A hard and even nasty presence on a defence that lacked such an element previously, Gleason has been a welcome addition in Toronto, finding a new lease on life with the Maple Leafs. "Gleas has been a guy thats come in and been a heart and soul guy for us," said head coach Randy Carlyle after the win against Florida. "Blocking shots, physical, hard to play against – thats his game. And we dont expect him to do anything more." Just as hed hoped when waiving his no-trade clause to come to Toronto, Gleason has quickly re-energized his career with the Leafs. A member of the US Olympic team in 2010, he was averaging less than 16 minutes for the Hurricanes before being dealt for John-Michael Liles and a prospect earlier this month. Grappling hold of minutes that previously went to the struggling duo of Paul Ranger and Mark Fraser, Gleason, averaging more than 19 minutes, has offered precisely the type of defensive force the Leafs, and more specifically Carlyle, have been searching for. The physical toll hes absorbed in his brief tenure as a Leaf has, at times, been almost excruciating to watch. Notable were the two bruising shots he blocked to protect a one-goal lead and eventual victory in Boston earlier this month. Earlier this week, in a win over Tampa, he endured one painful puck to the nether regions, another to the face, later sustaining a thunderous check into the end-boards by Teddy Purcell, one that briefly injured his left shoulder, but apparently did little to affect his status for this most recent game against the Panthers. "Hes an animal that guy," Nazem Kadri said of the Clawson, Michigan native. "Hell stand in front of anything. Thats important for a team to have, those defencemen, those players who would do anything for the team and thats exactly what Timmy is." Five Points 1. Success at Home Thursday marked the fifth consecutive win at home for the Leafs and 19th in 30 games this season (19-10-1). Toronto owns the fourth-highest winning percentage on home ice (.633) in the Eastern Conference, trailing only Pittsburgh, Boston and Tampa. "I think that as a coach you think you should win every game at home," Carlyle said before the win over Florida. "I think if you look at teams that are winning championships and winning division titles and going deep into the playoffs that they have a little bit of an edge when the opposition comes in. They know that this is going to be a tough place to play. I think were still working towards that." Large in the teams success at home is the offence theyve been able to provide. The Leafs have scored three goals per game at the ACC, half-a-goal per game more than theyve managed on the road. A big part of that attack is the leagues no. 1 ranked home power-play (28.4%), which clicked for a pair against the Panthers, including the 22nd this year for James van Riemsdyk – a career-high – and the 16th of the season for Joffrey Lupul. "I played in the west for a lot of years and I know there were some rinks that you went into that were tough and definitely tough to go into," said Mason Raymond, who has 10 of his 14 goals and 23 of his 32 points this season in Toronto. "I think any team is going to tell you they want to make their home rink a tough one to come into and play hard in." 2. En Fuego – Still Tallying three assists in a night for the first time this season, Nazem Kadri had what Carlyle described as "probably the best game that hes played in a long time at both ends of the rink". Kadri dug pucks free in the Panthers zone on goals from Cody Franson and Nik Kulemin before dishing to Lupul for a late power-play blast. "Offensively, Nazzie was a difference-maker tonight," said Carlyle. The 23-year-old has amassed 12 points in the past eight games and is on pace for 57 points this season. He spent seven of those eight games alongside Kulemin and Lupul, the former joining the pair against Montreal on Jan. 19. With Kulemin – a left shot – playing the right wing and Lupul – a right shot – playing the left wing, the line has gradually come alive. "It seems like Kulie is a better right winger, Lupul is a better left winger, which is kind of mind-boggling at times – ones a right shot and ones a left shot – but thats where they fit," said Carlyle. 3. Bolland Edging Closer Not looking anything like a player who has endured three months of rehab, Dave Bolland continues to push toward a return for the Leafs. Bolland missed his 41st game of the season on Thursday night, but could make it back before the Olympic break – Toronto plays its final game on Feb. 8. "I would think that theres a 50-50 chance," said Carlyle of Bollands prospects on Thursday morning. "He looks like hes moving quite freely out there and for the better part of the skates he doesnt seem to be affected by it. But obviously theres things going on that are inside that are taking a little bit more time." "Youve got to learn how to work that tendon again and work with it," the 27-year-old said recently. Out since Nov. 2, Bolland still has yet to participate in a full practice with the team – an important first step – joining the group at various points for the first time this week. "Its a dramatic injury," Carlyle said. "Its a difficult place to heal. It takes time. And were asking a guy to do something and his body is telling him another and thats when the push and shove becomes where he can take it." 4. Steve Spott Despite losing a slew of veteran players – Mike Zigomanis, Ryan Hamilton, Greg Scott, Will Acton among them – and their head coach Dallas Eakins to the NHL, the Toronto Marlies have remained an AHL force, winning seven of their past 10 games and leading their division once more this season. The man charged with steering a young, mostly inexperienced and overachieving ship is first-year head coach Steve Spott, formerly of the Kitchener Rangers. "I think Steves really good at getting the most out of his players," Troy Bodie told the Leaf Report, the 29-year-old spending 17 games with the Marlies this season. "Hes really patient with them. He knows its a young group and he has the patience to deal with them properly. They have to learn the pro game so theres a lot of teaching involved. I think hes just good at handling them." The Marlies continue to be led in scoring by defenceman T.J. Brennan and boast only two forwards with 10 goals – Spencer Abbott and the now NHL-bound Carter Ashton. Busting with youth, their roster includes 20-year-olds Josh Leivo, Stuart Percy, and Tyler Biggs along with 21-year-olds Greg McKegg, Sam Carrick, Brad Ross, David Broll, and Petter Granberg. And yet they stand atop the North division with 25 wins in 42 games. 5. Hollands Quest for Consistency From a pure production standpoint Peter Hollands second tour of duty with the Leafs hasnt gone quite as well as the first go around. Dealt to Toronto in mid-November, Holland had a string of eight points in one 10-game span, but has just one point in nine games since being recalled from the Marlies earlier this month. Maintaining consistency at the games highest level is a challenge most young players, the Caledon native included, have to overcome. "In the American League you can kind of have nights off and still end up with a goal or two assists or whatever, you can still end up on the point-sheet," Holland told the Leaf Report earlier this week. "But I think the challenge with this level is doing things that may not show up on the score-sheet but that are effective." Holland spoke of the subtler elements of the game, winning one-on-one battles in the defensive zone, grasping the teams defensive system, wearing down the opposition defence with extended offensive zone time and winning faceoffs. "Just all little things that go into having the team overall feel better out there on the ice," he said. With Trevor Smith due back shortly and Bolland pushing the pace en route to recovery (see above), Hollands spot in the lineup would seem to be in impending jeopardy. Still quite young in his NHL career – 60 games – further seasoning with Spott and the Marlies would not be a bad thing. Stats-Pack 22 – Goals for James van Riemsdyk this season, a career-high. 20 – Points for Phil Kessel in January, the highest total for any one month in his NHL career. 7 – Times in the past eight games that Nazem Kadri has recorded at least a point. 4 – Goals in the past 28 games for Mason Raymond, who scored his 14th this season against the Panthers. 12 – Points for Kadri in the past eight games. 28.4% – Power-play success rate for the Leafs at home this season, tops in the NHL. 5 – Blocked shots for Tim Gleason against the Panthers. 8-1-1 – Leafs record in the past 10 games. 8-8 – Toronto penalty kill in the past two games. Special Teams Capsule PP: 2-3Season: 22.8% (3rd) PK: 5-5Season: 77.7% (28th) Quote of the Night "A few weeks ago it felt like the sky was falling in Toronto. The Buffalo Sabres made the first big move of the pre-trade deadline season by dealing Ryan Miller and Steve Ott for Chris Stewart, Jaroslav Halak and draft picks, but they are probably far from done dealing. TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun believes the Sabres could look to flip Stewart before Wednesday. LeBrun believes the Sabres may consider Stewart as a possible fit for the teams rebuilding core, given that he has one year remaining on his contract and is still only 26. However, LeBrun countered, the offers on Stewart could also be enticing to the Sabres with the Ottawa Senators believed to be interested in the forward dating back to before Fridays blockbuster. Meanwhile, LeBrun tweeted Saturday afternoon that the Minnesota Wild are kicking the tires on goaltenders available via trade, including Halak. Pitt Stop? While Ryan Keslers availability via trade remains a contentious issue around the Canucks, the Pittsburgh Penguins might be leading the charge to try to pry the 29-year-old loose. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Reviews Rob Rossi tweeted early Saturday that the Pens are "very interested and [it] sounds like theyre on his list." Kesler has two years remaining on his current contract at an average annual value of $5 million. Rossi expanded on his tweet in an article on Saturday, reporting that the Penguins would offer Brandon Sutter, two 2014 draft picks and the Canucks choice of deefensemen Simon Despres or Brian Dumoulin Out of Oil If this is Ales Hemskys last week in an Oiler uniform, the Czech forward appears ready for whatever comes next.dddddddddddd "It could be my last two games in this locker-room, so I better enjoy it,” the 30-year-old winger said after practice on Friday. “I want to enjoy every moment Ill spend with the guys, with my friends, with the people I know." “Im ready for it. Im excited.” With a provincial showdown with the Flames on tap for Saturday it could provide one last battle-ground for the winger, who is slated to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. Strictly Business Cory Schneider doesnt want to see his crease-mate Martin Brodeur traded, but understands that if the 41-year-old does get moved its just part of the business of being an NHL player. “Marty is big part of this team and has been forever. Im not sure there is any player as synonymous with the franchise as Marty has been or is. So it wouldnt be just anybody leaving this team. It would be the most important player in the franchises history,” the 27-year-old netminder told The Star-Ledger. Schneider, of course, is no stranger to speculation, having endured years of rumours in Vancouver playing alongside Roberto Luongo. The way that situation played out this off-season – resulting in his relocation to New Jersey – has shown Schneider that anything is possible. “It would be difficult for everybody, but thats kind of what happens. I didnt think I was going to get traded and I did. It happens. It could happen to anybody.” ' ' '

EDMONTON - The Calgary Flames havent had much go right this season, but everything certainly came together for one night on Saturday. Curtis Glencross had a hat trick and Matt Stajan had a goal and three assists as the Flames scored four goals in a 3:05 span of the second period to come away with a massive 8-1 victory over the rival Edmonton Oilers. "What a great game," said Flames head coach Bob Hartley. "We wanted to redeem ourselves from (Friday) nights game. I could see that the boys were not very impressed with the performance from last night. We just worked very simple, we were very effective and we scored some great goals." Mike Cammalleri, Mark Giordano, Paul Byron and Kevin Westgarth also scored for the Flames (29-35-7) who have won four of their last six and sit 26th overall in the NHL. Nobody was expecting that kind of offensive explosion, however. "Its been a challenge for us to produce offence this year," Cammalleri said. "Its nice to see pucks go in like they did. You dont expect to score eight goals every night, but its nice to get that feeling where you feel like the puck is going to go in the net for us." It was an emotional game for Stajan, who pointed up to the sky after scoring on a penalty shot in honour of his newborn son, who died earlier this month. "That one means a lot," he said. "Its been obviously not easy and that one was for the little guy. It felt good and it gave us some puck-luck after too. Well move on now and Ill remember that one forever." Jeff Petry replied for the Oilers (25-38-9), who have lost two in a row and remain in second last place in the league. "Its pretty obvious how bad we played tonight. We are obviously very frustrated with how we played this game," said Oilers winger David Perron. "It is pretty embarrassing. We all know how bad it was and that the fans werent happy. If I was sitting in the stands, I would have been doing the same thing they were doing." Oilers head coach Dallas Eakins agreed that the fans were within their rights to voice their disproval to the team. "That was probably the longest last 15 minutes of a game that I have ever been involved with," he said. "I apologize to the fans who were here tonight and had to watch it. It was painful on the bench and Im sure it was painful in the stands. We hope it is just a blip on the radar because we have been playing pretty well lately. "I understand the frustration tonight. Especially losing to Calgary. No disrespect to Calgary, they are working hard and have had a tough year as well. But that is our rival, so it stings even worse." The Oilers started the scoring with a power-play goal four-and-a-half minutes in as Petry sent a long slapshot from the point through a sea of legs and past a screened Karri Ramo in his return to the Calgary net for the first time in seven weeks. Calgary tied the game four minutes later as Giordano got all of a shot from the top of the face-off circle, sending a bullet off the crossbar and into the Oiler net behind Edmonton starter Viktor Fasth. The Flames went up 2-1 four minutes into the second period as Mikael Backlund sent a cross-ice pass to Cammalleri, who was able to pick the corner with a quick shot before Fasth could get across the net. It was Cammalleris 23rd of the season. The floodgates opened from there. A minute later, Calgary had a two-goal advantage. Stajan was awarded a penalty shot after a rather suspect slashing call on a breakaway from Edmonton defender Mark Fraser. Stajan made the most of the one-on-one opportunity, beating Fasth glove-side with a backhand shot. The Flames scored their third goal in a 1:47 span as Cammalleri stopped short on a quick breakout and allowed two Edmonton defenders to go sliding past before feeding the puck to Byron at the side of the net for his sixth of the season. Just 1:18 later the Flames made it four goals in just over three minutes as Glencross tucked a shot over Fasths shoulder. Ben Scrivens replaced Fasth, who allowed five goals on 16 shots. Late in the second period, Oiler Taylor Hall threw a water bottle in frustration while sitting on the Oiler bench that ended up spraying the coaching staff, earning a terse scolding from head coach Dallas Eakins. "That stuff happens," Hall said. "Dallas and I have a great relationship. At times we all get a little frustrated with how things are going and sometimes you need to take a step back and realize that frustration isnt going to accomplish anything. "I dont expect anything more. We are all good." Calgary made it 6-1 five minutes into the third period as a Glencross shot hit the stick of Edmontons Justin Schultz and went through Scrivens legs. The Flames then struck again 37 seconds later as a Tyler Wotherspoon shot that was going wide was batted out of the air and in by Westgarth at the side of the net. The frustration continued for Edmonton as a jersey was thrown on the ice soon afterwards, prompting Scrivens to hook it up with his stick and fling it back into the crowd. "I always feel like as a fan, you pay your money and you get to do whatever you want," Scrivens explained. "If you want to boo me, jeer me, call me every name, you are entitled to that. You could spit on me for all I care, if I deserve it. But when I see a jersey thrown on the ice… Im from here. You are not just disrespecting the guys in this room, you are disrespecting guys who wore this jersey before us. All of the great guys who have pulled this sweater over their heads, Gretzky, Messier, they all took great pride wearing that jersey. "That logo is a sacred thing for us. It is disheartening for me to see our fans treat it that way." Calgary made it 8-1 with just under seven minutes to play as Glencross recorded his hat trick goal on a long shot through traffic for his 10th goal of the season. The Flames return home for a three-game set, starting with the San Jose Sharks on Monday. The Oilers play the fourth game of a six-game homestand on Tuesday, also against the Sharks. cheap jerseys . "Throughout the course of the season, youre going to have a clunker or two that you have to try to forget as soon as you can," Dickey said. "Obviously, today was one of those days for me. A lot of this game is about how to handle adversity and manage regret. That will be it for me tonight." Dave Bush did no better in relief, giving up five runs in three frames. Jose Reyes and Maicer Izturis each had two hits for the Blue Jays, who fell to 2-4 on the season. Run support was an issue for Blue Jays hurler Brandon Morrow his last time out and he will take the hill Tuesday against the Tigers. Morrow made his season debut in last Wednesdays 3-2 loss to Cleveland and permitted just a run on six hits and two walks over six innings with eight Ks. MMorrow has made 11 career appearances, two starts, against the Tigers and is 1-1 with three saves and a 3.dddddddddddd72 ERA. The Tigers are 3-3 on the season and took two of three contests from the New York Yankees over the weekend. The Tigers failed in their bid for a three-game sweep with Sundays 7-0 setback as ace Justin Verlander was dealt the loss, giving up three runs and seven hits in 7 1/3 innings. Verlander countered Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia, who held the Tigers scoreless through seven innings. "(Verlander) gave us a chance. We just didnt do much with CC today," said Tigers manager Jim Leyland. Torii Hunter and Matt Tuiasosopo had two hits apiece in defeat. After hosting the Blue Jays, Detroit will head west for nine games against the Oakland Athletics, Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Angels. Anibal Sanchez pitched well in his season debut for the Tigers, but did not record a decision in last Wednesdays 3-2 loss at Minnesota. Sanchez draws the start Tuesday and allowed just two hits in five shutout innings against the Twins. Sanchez, a right-hander, split time with Miami and Detroit last season and hopes his home debut will produce a winning result. In three career starts against the Blue Jays, Sanchez is 1-2 with a lofty 6.75 ERA. Toronto lost four of six matchups with Detroit a season ago. ' ' '

NEW YORK -- Mavericks guard Delonte West sounded contrite yet surprised by the $25,000 fine levied against him by the NBA for jabbing his finger in the ear of Utah swingman Gordon Haywood. "I didnt think it was going to be that steep," West said Wednesday night before Dallas played Houston. "Its a play that shouldnt be in the game. ... Its not a good example to set for the youth that we are trying to teach to play the right way." The NBA issued the fine earlier in the day, calling it a "physical taunt." West had been called for fouling Hayward away from the ball then walked after him to give him what he called a "wet willy" during the second quarter of Utahs 123-121 triple-overtime win over Dallas on Monday night. West received a technical but was not tossed out of the game. Hayward walked away from the confrontation. Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle didnt want to discuss the fine before Wednesdays game. He said the team accepts it and is moving forward. The coach, however, did have a conversation about the incident with West, who acknowledged that it wasnt a smart play. "I get intense and I get fiery out there, he just wants me to channel my energy the right way," West said. "Got to be a smart player all areas of the floor, not just offence and defence. Youve got to play the cerebral game too, and knowing guys are trying to get underneath my skin and things like that." cheap jerseys from china . E-mail Hockey Insider Darren Dreger and hell answer your emails at dregereport@tsn.ca! Hey Dregs, If the Columbus Blue Jackets keep struggling this season, do you think Rick Nash may ask for a trade? Do you think the team might think about trading him? Patrick A: Hey Patrick. Im not very good at predicting the future, nor is it fair to speculate on what Rick Nash is thinking. However, I know Nash is very proud of his role as captain of the Columbus Blue Jackets and accepts some of the responsibility for his teams disappointing start this season. Nash believed in this team when he signed a long term extension in 2010 and I cant imagine, as bad as the Blue Jackets appear to be right now, hes ready to bail. Nash is a man of character and will work with the organization to get stronger. Its possible that things may sour in the future to a point where that view changes, but its unfair to speculate hes at that stage now, or that the team will consider trading him. Columbus general manager Scott Howson has addressed and dismissed those rumours and earlier today as spoke to my colleague Aaron Portzline following a report Blue Jackets forward Jeff Carter has asked for a trade. Heres Portzlines update posted on BlueJacketsxtra.com: "There has been no trade request," Howson said. Asked if Carter or his agent, Rick Curran, had even intimated that the player would welcome a move, Howson said: "No. Not at all." He then continued ... "Look, nobodys happy right now. Jeffs not happy. Rick (Nash) isnt happy. Weve won three games. Nobodys happy. We see Jeff as part of the solution here. We want to get him integrated into the lineup and into the team. Hes missed 10 games, and hes only now getting back into the lineup and playing. We gave up two very big assets for him." Curran also has denied that Carter has requested a trade. ----- Darren, What are your thoughts on the Bruins potentially trading Tuukka Rask? With Thomas continuing to play at an elite level and quite affordable when you consider some of the goalie contracts that have been signed the last couple of years, doesnt it make sense for the Bruins to try to pry away an impact forward or defenceman while his value is high? Not to mention that at some point Rask will be tired of being a back-up and seek a trade himself! Lets face it, his career is being stalled by Thomas! Thanks,Jeff A: Jeff, youre right - Rask would have considerable value if the Bruins were to throw his name on to the open market. Although each and every time this subject is raised with the few GMs in the NHL who have the luxury of such quality back up goalies (Schneider-VAN, Enroth-BUF), its quickly dismissed based on the belief, to go deep in to the playoffs and contend for the Stanley Cup, you need an above-average goaltending tandem. At 37, Tim Thomas is clearly in the twilight of his career. Thomas, who has one season remaining at $5 million, doesnt represent the future in goal in Boston. But Rask does. Tuukka is scheduled to become a restricted free agent on July 1 and will undoubtedly get a nice raise onn the $1.dddddddddddd5 million hes earning this season. Hes more than happy biding his time in Boston, polishing the Stanley Cup ring he helped his team win last summer while being mindful of the opportunity he may have to lead this organization to future championships. ----- Hi Darren, Seems like this year, were not hearing much about the Phoenix Coyotes situation. When does the league need to make a decision on this team and do you think the city of Glendale is going to give the NHL yet another $25 million gift to keep them in the desert (Go, Nordiques, Go!)? Thanks, Marc (Gatineau, Quebec) A: Marc, Glendale will not pay the $25 million again. That ship has sailed. While there is no official date set, its believed there is a soft deadline of late January as to when the NHL would need to know whether it has a firm ownership group in place to take over the Coyotes. It seems unlikely, however, the NHL would acknowledge the possibility of relocation before the Coyotes play their final game, so we are still months away from determining the future of this team in the desert. ----- Hi Darren, what is the status of Andy McDonalds concussion? Is it serious? Hes been out for a month! Thanks. Yours truly,Thomas J. Salb, B.Sc., OLIP A: Thomas, Im told McDonald isnt around the team much, so that would suggest, like Perron, Crosby and others who have suffered a major concussion, hes taking the time he needs to rest and deal with whatever symptoms he may still have in a more controlled environment. With injuries to Crombeen, Perron and Huskins to name but a few, the St. Louis Blues are dealing with a considerably depleted lineup. But the good news comes in the fact that David Perron continues to skate every day and appears to to be getting close to a return. In fact, Perron wore a regular sweater Friday in practice and has been cleared for contact. Theres still no official timetable for when he might be able to come back from what has been an incredibly difficult journey. ----- Hey Darren, I was wondering why a team like Anaheim would pick up a slumping player like Niklas Hagman for $1.5 million off re-entry waivers? He could be a dud and just take up cap space. Do you think Anaheim get a new lease on the season from Hagman or will he just take up room in the press box? Thanks, JoshCalgary A: Josh, no question claiming Hagman on re-entry is a gamble and even at $1.5 million which is Anaheims share of Hagmans $3 million salary, its an expensive risk. Hagman made his Ducks debut against archrival Los Angeles on Thursday and played on a line with Brandon McMillan and Devante Smith-Pelly. Hagman played just over 10 minutes in a 5-3 loss and finished the night an even player, while Anaheims stars Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry were both minus-3. At just 31, it appeared in Calgary that Hagmans better days were behind him, but its hard to fault Ducks GM Bob Murray for trying to fill a hole in his third line by taking a flyer on veteran player who needs a fresh start. Hes a character guy and will give the Ducks all he has at a cost thats far more friendly at half price. I have no problem with this claim. ' ' '

MADRID, Spain -- President Josep Bartomeu defended Barcelonas dealings in signing Neymar, saying the Spanish champion would do it all over again despite being charged with tax fraud. A Spanish judge charged Barcelona with the crime on Thursday, alleging it swindled the state of 9.1 million euros ($12.5 million) through payments to varying companies and false contracts. Bartomeu says "we did everything according to the letter of the law (...) our contract with Neymar and Santos is totally legal. The negotiations, the transactions, the contracts, everything was done legally and we would do it all again the exact same way." INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis picked a poor time to have a bad game. The Colts missed an opportunity to seize control of the AFC South, show a prime-time TV audience theyre a legitimate title contender and now have to prepare for Peyton Manning and the unbeaten Broncos on a short week. Good luck, right? Chuck Pagano thinks it could be a perfect remedy for Indianapolis ills. "I know it cant come quickly enough for all of us," Pagano said Tuesday when asked about Sundays game. "But weve got to go through the process and prepare, obviously, for this next opponent." Sure, theres plenty to fix between now and the leagues most anticipated game of the season -- Mannings return to Lucas Oil Stadium. And after Monday nights 19-9 loss, the Colts coaches will use every precious moment they have. The cramming session began after an early morning flight back to Indy. Pagano and his staff spent the first part of the day reviewing the tape from their latest stumble in San Diego. It didnt take long to dissect the offence with what Pagano described as only 42 "gradable" plays. They saw four drops including potential scores from Darrius Heyward-Bey and Coby Fleener and a big drop by Reggie Wayne on third down that would have given Indy a key first down. Luck was sacked once, threw a late interception and was under pressure much of the night, and Indy ran only 17 times for 74 yards. Thats not how these Colts (4-2) were built. Yet the biggest problem came on third down. Indy converted only 2 of 10 chances. San Diego (3-3) was 7 of 14. The combination led to a 17-minute disparity in time of possession -- an oddity for a team that came into the weekend with the leagues No. 4 rushing offence. "It was different. It certainly was uncharacteristic of us," Pagano said. "I just think, you can point your finger to a lot of things -- didnt execute well, obviously, third down was an issue on both sides of the ball, which led to the time of possession issue and all those type of things. "Three third downs on defence where you have penalties that extend drives by four plays, five plays, nine plays, lead to 10 points, thats shooting yourself in the foot. Talked about the dropped passes, which are totally uncharacteristic of our guys. We had opportunities, we had chances." They just couldnt convert. Indy cant afford a repeat this week against Manning and the high-scoring Broncos (6-0). Denver averages 44.2 points per game, a pace that would shatter the NFLs single-season scoring record set by New England during its perfect 2007 regular season (589). One way to combat the Broncos is to steal a page from San Diegos game plan by keeping the ball on the ground and out of Mannings hands. But Indy has to find other solutions and fast. The Colts have been credited with eight drops over the previous two weeks, and the slow starts are becoming a disturbing trend. At San Diego, the Colts settled for field goals on the first and last drives of the first half. The previous week against Seattle, they fell into a 12-0 deficit after opening the game with three straight three-and-outs. Give Manning an opening like that, and its game over as players such as Wayne know all too well. But the Colts have been one of the leagues most resilient teams since Paganos arrival. They went from 2-14 in 2011, when Manning missed the season with a nerve injury, to 11-5 under Luck last season -- tied for the second-greatest one-season improvement in league history. They did that as Pagano spent most of the season battling cancer. Indy still has not lost two straight under Pagano, a streak they kept intact by winning at defending NFC champion San Francisco in Week 3, and they have won nine of their past 10 home games. Theyve just never had to rebound on a short week. "Again, Sunday cant come quick enough," Pagano said. "You play a West Coast game on Monday night, you deal with it as things come. Well put a plan together and get these guys back, get some guys back hopefully and get them healthy and recharged and all those type of things and, hopefully, get ready to play a good ball game on Sunday night." cheap jerseys from china paypal . LAS VEGAS -- Brad Keselowski once blew a tire while leading the final lap of this same Nationwide Series race, so he knew he couldnt get excited about a victory in Vegas until he actually crossed the line. He finally got there Saturday after overcoming electrical problems, traffic and Kyle Busch for an uncommonly satisfying victory. Keselowski held off Busch in the final laps to win the Nationwide race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the first time. Keselowski earned his 28th career Nationwide win on his 20th track, doing it in his eighth try in Vegas -- where he infamously blew a tire on the final lap in 2011, handing a win to Mark Martin. The 2012 Sprint Cup champion finally cracked this track despite a remarkable series of setbacks and challenges that left Keselowski more relieved than excited. "We found every way we could to make it hard," Keselowski said. "This Ford was flying today. These races arent getting any easier to win. I drove as hard as I could, every lap." Keselowski has been in contention in the Nationwide race in Las Vegas several times over his previous seven starts, but managed just two top-10 finishes after repeated trouble. He found enormous trouble in this one, but still led 144 of the 200 laps. He had led 106 of the first 139 laps before a sluggish green-flag pit stop allowed Busch to move in front. Keselowski also lost three spots early after sliding through his pit box, and he later lost power because of a faulty alternator, forcing him to turn off equipment. "It was systematic alternator failure," crew chief Jeremy Bullins said. "At that point, you go into safe mode, shut off everything you can, and hope the battery makes it to the end. We were losing power at the end, but we had enough to make it." Keselowski then navigated through a thicket of traffic on the final laps in an exciting finish. "I knew it was just a matter of time before (Busch) caught me," Keselowski said. "I was just trying to get through as much traffic as possible." Busch came up from a 37th-place start to finish second on his hometown track, but couldnt catch Keselowskis Penske Ford. Busch, who got sent to the back for making adjustments after qualifying, was decidedly unimpressed with his cars engine, which is from Joe Gibbs Racing, not Toyota. "Our car was super-fast on the long run," Busch said. "Best motor won today, thats for sure. Probably the best car. He was really good. Thats all we had." Kyle Larson was third despite early damage to his car, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. finished fourth in front of 18-year-old rookie Chase Elliott, who posted his first top-five finish. Larson managed a standout finish despite hitting the wall early in the race, while Elliott also gave an impressive performance. The races most eye-catching move was made by Matt Kenseth, who was racing three wide with Busch and Keselowski when he spun on the final turn on the 159th lap, turning sideways into the straightaway. Kenseth incredibly managed to save it without crashing, while Elliott also narrowly avoided running straight into Kenseths perpendicular car. Florida (32-2) built a 16-point lead early in the second half, but Kentucky nearly pulled off an improbable comeback to hand the Gators their first loss since early December. Two missed free throws gave the Wildcats (24-10) a final possession, but James Young slipped trying to drive into the lane. The ball squirted loose, and the horn sounded while Floridas Scottie Wilbekin and Kentuckys Andrew Harrison dived for it. A giddy Wilbekin popped up and sprinted toward the Gators bench in celebration. Harrison rolled over with the ball, then put his hands over his face in anguish. The Gators extended their school-record winning streak to 26 games and awaited a sure No. 1 seed when the NCAA pairings were announced Sunday evening. Patric Young and Michael Frazier II led Florida with 14 points apiece, while Wilbekin and Casey Prather had 11 each. Kentucky, also headed for the NCAAs, was paced by Aaron Harrison with 16 points. Young added 13, while Willie Cauley-Stein had 10 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks. Florida led 40-30 at halftime and scored the first six points of the second half for its biggest lead. But Kentucky ussed a 14-0 run to close within one point with just over 6 minutes remaining.dddddddddddd It was a nail-biter the rest of the way, the Wildcats coming oh-so-close to beating the first team to go 18-0 in SEC play during the regular season. First, Andrew Harrison drove down the middle of the lane and put up a running jumper with 33 seconds remaining, but the shot clanked off the rim. Dorian Finney-Smith grabbed the rebound for the Gators. Kentucky was forced to foul three times to get Florida into the bonus. With 23 seconds left, Wilbekin missed the front end of a 1-and-1, but Finney-Smith came up with another huge rebound and was quickly fouled by the Wildcats. Finney-Smith missed the front end, too, giving Kentucky a chance to win it. Coming out of a timeout, the Wildcats didnt even get off a shot. Andrew Harrison dribbled the clock down at the top of the key, then dished off to Young on the right wing. He tried to cut into the lane, bumped a Florida player and tumbled to the court. STANFORD, Calif. -- Matt Besler and Geoff Cameron might hear it from every angle if they were paying any attention or had a moments spare time. They could be reminded every day that this is the first time since 1990 the U.S. heads to a World Cup with no central defenders having played previous minutes in soccers showcase event. And that makes an already daunting task in Group G much more challenging for the Americans, who face Ghana, Portugal and Germany next month in Brazil. The competition for spots on the Americans back line is fierce, leaving no time to analyze the groups inexperience. "For us, theres nothing we can do about it," Besler said before Sundays training at Stanford Stadium. "We cant change the fact that weve never experienced a World Cup. Were looking at it as a great opportunity. Weve never done it before but everyone is excited and really hungry to prove that we belong here and that we can do well." Nobody knows how the foursome will look for the teams World Cup opener June 16 against Ghana in Natal, yet coach Jurgen Klinsmann will get a glimpse during an exhibition against Azerbaijan on Tuesday night at Candlestick Park. He has several choices for each defensive spot. If there are concerns with Omar Gonzalez, who tweaked his left knee during a May 3 game with the Los Angeles Galaxy against Colorado, Klinsmann might go with Cameron in the middle alongside Besler. Gonzalez has since returned to full training. "I think the competition is healthy, and its definitely alive and well here," Gonzalez said. "Before I got injured, I was probably the fittest Ive been in a very long time." Cameron plays right back for Stoke in the Premier League but insists he only needs a couple of reps at centre back in practice, scrimmages or exhibitions to find a groove again. "When youre playing against Man United, Chelsea, Everton, Tottenham, youre playing all the big boys every single weekend against the best competition, theres no room for mental errors, theres no complaining about how tired you are or this or that because the games come so quick," Cameron said. "For me, it was a learning process the first year. As the second year comes, you get more comfortable, youre confident going into the other stadiums." Besler, the 27-year-old Sporting Kansas City star who was the 2012 MLS Defender of the Year, has played in the middle with both Cameron and Gonzalez. Cameron and Besler very well could start in the centre back spots for the opener. Fabian Johnson or Timmy Chandler might play right back, though Johnson said he has seen regular time there. "I played right back in all the scrimmages so Im ready for this position," Johnson said Sunday. DaMarcus Beasley could be on the left as he looks to become the first American to play in four World Cups. "It is different playing with different guys. Everyone has different styles," Besler said. "I think as a team we play the same but when you have different guys back there you have to make little adjustments depending on whos back there. But for me I have experience with both. Ive played in World Cup qualifiers with Geoff, with Omar. I feel comfortable with anyone, really." If midfielder Jermaine Jones is suspended at some point for accumulation of yellow cards, Klinsmann might call upon Johnson in the defensive midfield. While experience on the defence would certainly be preferred at this stage, goalkeeper Tim Howard will help everyone get up to speed. "All things considered, of course youd like to have some guys back there who understand the rhythm and the pacing and the difference of a World Cup," said Alexi Lalas, a starting U.S. defender for the 1994 World Cup, former MLS general manager and current analyst. "This decision was made a long time ago, regardless of the final personnel, you knew you were going to have some World Cup inexperience out there. And we still dont know how the back four is going to look. "With that being decided and the veterans no longer being part of the scene, it was about getting some sort of understanding, communication and comfort with the defence. Thats really a much more important piece considering theres not going to be World Cup experience." Cameron is considered a central defender by Klinsmann. "Ive said that over three years I think his best position is centre back," Klinsmann said. "And its good to know he can play right back, too, and its good to know he can play a No. 6, too. Still I think his best fit, his best game for himself is the centre back role." Klinsmann isnt making a big deal about the teams lack of experience. Only five players among the 23 have appeared in a World Cup. "The plan is to help them in that process, to get in that World Cup with a lot of confidence and being sure that they know what theyre doing. In every training session we will work on those pieces and we will guide them through all the different things that happen during a game, preparing the best way possible for the opponents they face in the group stage already," Klinsmann said of the defence. "Im sure theyre going to be very well prepared and they will be ready for the task. Theres always a first time in life in whatever you do. Its for some the first World Cup, though its the first of hopefully many World Cups to come for them. Im not worried about the inexperience." The proposal sent Tuesday to league executives came a week after no minorities were hired for eight coaching vacancies and seven general manager openings. There are only four minority head coaches going into the 2013 season, the fewest since 2003. "I think the league recognizes that these are the challenges we are dealing with when it relates to diversity and this is a plan of action that they can accept and be willing to work with," John Wooten, chairman of the Fritz Pollard Alliance Foundation said. "I feel very comfortable that this will be extended into the Rooney Rule." Robert Gulliver, the NFLs executive vice-president of human resources, said in a statement last week the hiring results were "disappointing" and anticipated making revisions. In a letter to Gulliver and Jeff Pash, the NFLs executive vice-president and general counsel, the alliance said: "We believe pipeline issues are a part of the reason weve seen a reduction in head coaches of colour over the past few years, and this expansion will diversify the head coaching pipeline." With teams trending toward hiring coaches with offensive backgrounds, its important for minorities to hold co-ordinator positions. Baltimores Jim Caldwell and Pep Hamilton, hired last week by Indianapolis, are the only minority offensive co-ordinators in the NFL. Caldwell, who led the Colts to a Super Bowl appearance in his first season in 2009, didnt even get an interview for a coaching vacancy this off-season. "In this quarterback-dominated era, it seeems clubs are increasingly looking for offensive coaches to fill head coaching positions in particular, and far too few minority coaches have been given offensive co-ordinator and play-calling responsibilities," said Cyrus Mehri, co-founder and counsel of the FPA.dddddddddddd"We want to see a special focus on offensive co-ordinator and play calling duties going forward. We have many experienced wide receiver and running back position coaches ready to be co-ordinators now." Wooten said the Rooney Rule for co-ordinators wouldnt apply to just-hired coaches because "it wouldnt be fair to them" going into their interviews. "We made a differential in that the rule extends to a sitting coach when he starts to hire co-ordinators and assistant head coaches," Wooten said. "It wouldnt be fair to a coach coming in because thats one of the real positives of a new coach when hes sitting in that interview is to be able to tell them exactly who his staff will be and who has committed to coming with him." The alliance also proposed a reinstatement of the leagues front office and coaching symposia to train coaches and front office personnel for future opportunities. Theres never been a minority team president. "Thats very important now because the president is very much involved in the selection process," Wooten said. The Rooney Rule was implemented in 2003 and named after Pittsburgh Steelers chairman Dan Rooney, who pushed for it. Before the diversity rule, there had only been six minority head coaches in the NFL in more than 80 years. Since then, 12 have been hired. The Fritz Pollard Alliance is a group of minority coaches, front office and scouting personnel established 10 years ago. ' ' '

PARIS -- Milos Raonic hopes his recent success on clay leads to a long run at the French Open. The Canadian star won his opening match at the second Grand Slam of the year on Sunday, beating Australian wildcard Nick Kyrgios 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 to reach the second round. Raonic, the eighth seed from Thornhill, Ont., needed exactly two hours to advance against one of the games rising young stars. He also beat an Australian opponent for the first time at a Grand Slam after losing to Carsten Ball at the 2010 U.S. Open and Lleyton Hewitt at the 2012 Australian Open. He won on his third match point, sealing victory with a 27th ace. Raonic, who came to Roland Garros from a Rome semifinal last weekend, finished with 50 winners and 30 unforced errors, breaking on four of ten chances. "I felt very good, I was able to do the things I wanted to do," said Raonic, who next plays one of two Czechs, Lukas Rosol of Jiri Vesely. "In the first round you go in not knowing exactly how things are going to play out. When it mattered, I was able to put forward the right attitude and the right level of tennis. Im happy with that." Raonic has a career record of 32-23 on clay courts, compared to 100-42 on hard surfaces that dont deaden his powerful serve. But Raonic had two quarter-final appearances as well as the Rome semifinal in four clay-court tournaments leading up to the French Open. Hes trying to go beyond the third round at Roland Garros for the first time in his career. Later Sunday, sixth seed Tomas Berdych beat Canadian qualifier Peter Polansky of Thornhill 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. Polansky, ranked 137th and playing in only his sixth career singles main draw at a major, last played a Grand Slam at the 2010 US Open. He was successful on only one of six break points while committing 21 unforced errors with 15 winners.dddddddddddd "Its good to be back in the main draw of a slam," said Polansky. "I played well and enjoyed it. I was hoping to get a better draw, there are a lot of guys I could have beaten today. "I played well, I just came up a it short. But I take a lot of positives out of the last few weeks. Maybe I have more belief in my game now that Im older." Raonic said that despite heavy conditions in wet Paris, the courts held up well compared to Rome. "Theyre quite similar, though here they can change a little bit more due to the cloud coverage and not really that much sun the last few days," he said. "The ball wasnt bouncing as much as it had actually the last days on the outside courts. The 23-year-old Raonic used his experience against the young Australian, reducing Kyrgios to racket-hurling frustration after breaking immediately after losing serve in the second set. Raonic began the third set with a break for 2-0, lost it, but again gained the lead 4-2 on his way to victory. Raonic said that he was having trouble at times on serve, but managed to fight through the problem. "I was getting it together when it mattered, and thats all I can really ask," he said. "There was some moments where I was losing a little bit of concentration on my level, and I was able to put it together when I was in the important moments." After answering on-court questions in French, Raonic then said he would tweet a message in the language later. He said he would have the tweet proofed by an expert speaker before broadcasting it to his 143,000 followers. ' ' '

The 35-year-old from Brantford, Ont., is enjoying a short break before ramping things up in July. He plans to play at The Greenbrier Classic early next month before returning to the John Deere Classic. Entry in the British Open remains a question mark for now but Hearn is locked in for the July 24-27 RBC Canadian Open at the Royal Montreal Golf Club. He has yet to play the Ile-Bizard, Que., course but feels his game should be a good fit for the old-style, tree-lined layout. "Its a course from my understanding that keeping the ball in play off the tee is going to be at a premium," he said on a conference call. "Thats something that my game is well suited for." Hearn, who celebrated a birthday Tuesday, said now that hes in his mid-30s he feels more comfortable taking a little time off before busy stretches on the Tour. "I think Ive gotten a lot better at setting my schedule out and giving myself breaks when I need them, so when I do play I feel like Im ready to compete each and every week that I do tee it up," he said. Hearn, who turned pro in 2001, finished tied for sixth at the Honda Classic last March and had another sixth-place effort last month at The Players Championship. However, he has missed the cut at six of his last 16 tournaments and currently holds the No. 90 position in the world rankings.
